HKSI Paper 1 consists of 60 multiple-choice questions (4 options each), 90 minutes, with a 70% passing mark (42 correct answers). Questions are presented in bilingual format (Chinese and English). It is computer-based (CBE) with no penalty for wrong answers and no calculation questions.
Anyone applying to become an SFC Licensed Representative or Responsible Officer for any type of regulated activity (Types 1-10 and 13) must pass Paper 1. It is the foundational paper required for all securities and futures practitioners.
The exam fee is HKD 1,630 for Hong Kong venue and remote examination, or HKD 2,050 for global examination centres. Fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. You must schedule your exam within 90 days of enrolment.
Yes. HKSI offers a remote examination option. You need a smartphone (iOS 12+ or Android 9+) as a second monitoring device. Since September 2025, tablets and laptops are no longer accepted.
HKSI is the licensing exam for the securities and futures industry (regulated by SFC), while IIQE is the qualifying exam for insurance intermediaries (regulated by IA). They serve completely different financial sectors.
